MOVIE REVIEW GUNDALA

Sancaka has lived on the streets since his parents left him. Living a hard life, Sancaka survives by thinking about his own safety. When the condition of the city gets worse and injustice rages throughout the country, Sancaka must decide whether he continues to live to look after himself or rise to become their oppressed hero.
 letterboxd.com

As the opening movie for Jagat Sinema Bumilangit, Gundala will be the benchmark how next movie move. Directed by Joko Anwar (Satan Slave, Modus Anomali), the movie will be served as the origin of Gundala, a hero who get his power from lighting struck. Story began from little Sancaka, Gundala alter ego, play by Abimana Aryasatya (Warkop DKI Reborn, Haji Backpacker) how he struggled with his life after lost his family and how the lighting always chase him since his early years and continued develop to adult day when he can accept the power of lighting. Tone in this film, especially at beginning similar to horror movie with dark color dominated the screen but as film moving forward more colors play begin to appear. Nothing really special about the scoring or music, just completed the scene without overpowering a scene. Camera plays also didn't to unique but still good enough, I like how the camera following the fighting scene. Muzakki Ramdhan as young Sancaka act very well maybe one of the best in the film if not the best, Pengkor play by Bront Palarae (Satan Slave) following later with his good sympathetic villain act more like Vulture at Spider-Man: Homecoming who have strong background for his purpose and Sancaka father take Uncle Ben role, with his quote. Another stand out for me is fighting choreography especially when Sancaka fight thugs but sadly the quality weaken toward the end, and the last fight is so bad added with bad editing, like the scene jumping randomly, make it worse. I don't know why they force introduce many characters in the film mainly at the end of it, which is actually cool, but after disappointing last fight Gundala became forgotten because of it, even there're characters that previously at universe press conference was introduced as a hero in the universe but appear as villain here, interesting how they will bring the story. Will waiting for next movie, and how they will build the next world.

MOVIE REVIEW - BUMI MANUSIA

This is a story of Minke and Annelies who weave love in the early 20th century colonial turbulance. Minke is a native youth, purebred Javanese. While Annelies is a mixed-Dutch girl, the daughter of a nyai (mistress), called Ontosoroh.
IMDB.COM

No, I didn't read the book so the review is based on the movie. The movie adapted from a novel with same title by Pramoedya Ananta Toer published in 1980 and acclaimed as one of the best Indonesian literature. Story takes around Minke life, his love story. Setting during colonialism in Indonesia by Dutch, and it centered on discrimination between Europe and local people. Hanung Bramantyo (Jomblo, Ayat-ayat Cinta) take the helmet to make the masterpiece came to life and overall he did a decent job. Location set, audio and other technician aspect nothing is stand out, some are complaining about wardrobe when the trailer is out especially for the Dutch, I don't know the detail about it but for me it does not bother me as casual viewer. Best acting coming from Sha Ine Febriyanti as Nyai Ontosoroh, she can look like strong independent woman and became soft motherly when dealing with her daughter or Minke. Main protagonist, Minke, portrait by Iqbal Ramadhan (Dilan 1990) give a so-so performance with numerous flat expression throughout movie still I rise my hat for his Dutch language and Mawar Eva de Jongh (Serendipity) as Annelies the heroine, also didn't make remarkable performance both just make acceptable acting. Something that noticeable is the rough editing of the film, some scene to scene or plot to plot transition didn't smooth and looks like jumping. The Biggest value of the book is how the author tell the story about discrimination but in this movie, it didn't really appear, yes it has some discrimination scene but didn't offer something new that we already know except law about mixed child and the story really focus on Minke-Ann love story at least that what I feel during the movie. Also, I can't see Minke's brilliance moment as educated person, Nyai Ontosoroh even looks more educated than him. Still, I think this movie will be got good reception as the story fit local taste, and Iqbal's fans also will hype the movie plus other Pram's film Perburuan from same production house have less screen at the first day, another 1 million viewer this year.

MOVIE REVIEW - DUA GARIS BIRU

Dara and Bima violated the boundary without knowing the consequences. They try to take responsibility for their choices.
IMDB.COM

Surprisingly it really hype, sold out at many cinema in the first day even at place where I see they add more play time outside the scheduled. Maybe because Euis factor, I hear the name mentioned several times before the show, or controversial story before or perfect timing release due school holiday, dunno. It didn't take the brake with the story, the "incident" happen at very beginning and they focus more on story after that. The story develop after parental figure introduced, and how the event effect their families life, interaction between family member also seems natural with details, like “The key is on you isn't?” “No, it's on you.” conversation my parent usually have, like it. The director presented the hard theme with easy way to understand for their target market, the teenage, she put information that they should know from their school-day. Zara (Dara) pickup her good performance from previous film here, Angga (Bima) tried to follow her lead but honestly didn't too memorable but still nice actor we have here. The best is the mothers, Cut Mini and Lulu Tobing, they give their best as parents and will be hard to follow by other, Dwi Sasono never disappoint me good acting as always. Many scenes they take was good especially with their camera position, tone they set also nice despite the gloomy theme but it still bright at same time and I like the detail sound at the background like door open/close, neighbor whispering etc. Some dialogue really really cliche but you can be perfect on everything, right. The Best scene is the UKS scene, no contest. Asri Welas cameo didn't need but still nice addition for tone play. Ending is not the best but still acceptable for all parties. Fresh air in Indonesian cinema, the hype will be wider with mouth-to-mouth recommendation after their first day.

MOVIE REVIEW - BRIGHTBURN

What if a child from another world crash-landed on Earth, but instead of becoming a hero to mankind, he proved to be something far more sinister?
IMDB.COM

Movie with good premise, “What happen if Superman is the bad guy?” This movie sells James Gunn (Guardian of the Galaxy) name, even though he's not the Director here but it's enough to make many people curious. The one who take the command is David Yarovesky (The Hive) as the superhero turn horror movie, this give different looks how horror movie displayed it shows how human too powerless to overcome the terror. Like usual Superman movie, film started with the Alien fall at someone farm, a family that adopted him and made him a normal human being but like other teenager puberty is always the problem. What I like in this film is the level of the gore, not overpowering but still nice and seems real, two murders is the best scene here. I don't know it's due the theater speaker or anything but the sound stage is good, combinating with some scene make it really pleasure experience. The mother (Elizabeth Banks; Definitely Maybe, Spiderman) make the best acting here others just so-so even the boy. Maybe it will not be as monumental as The Omen for same genre but it's still had good point to enjoy. The ending also open for sequel, if any.

MOVIE REVIEW - AVENGERS: ENDGAME

After the devastating events of Avengers: Infinity War (2018), the universe is in ruins. With the help of remaining allies, the Avengers assemble once more in order to undo Thanos' actions and restore order to the universe.
 IMDB.COM

No, this is not a movie, this is just 3 hours epilogue of the journey that been built for over decade. Where will I start? The story is build perfect, it's looks they really prepare it from the start with the first Iron man and like rumors say that this will end big phase of mcu story itself the story focus on the original Avengers members who coincidence all of it's safe from Thanos effect. Although the depression tone, they can still make nice joke here and there but we still need Luis here. Unlike the previous Avengers movie, this time all members have their own story with balance portion, everyone have time to shine. CGI not spectacular but still good enough same with previous movie, nothing new, the biggest CGI show shown in the last battle unfortunately it's not colorful as Aquaman deep sea battle, too dark not the fighting but the tone. The ending not so open for sequel as I state before this will make huge leap for this universe but still it's the right way to end. Overall, like Star Wars, LOTR, or Harry Potter MCU is another great legacy for film industry and will be remembered for long time, especially this Endgame.

MOVIE REVIEW - 27 STEPS OF MAY

Following a horrible experience, May has isolated herself and stopped talking. Her father blames himself and tries to live by May's conditions year after year. But one day a hole appears in the wall and through it May discovers a magician.
IMDB.COM
Another gem this month for Indonesian movie, April was nice time for Indonesian cinema. Story about depression, it's picture perfect how sexually abuse can ruin not only the victim but also the family. From all aspect, acting is the strong point here, Raihaanun as May and Lukman Sardi as her father is play at high level. Their emotion, whatever it's sad, anger or happy was deliver right to audience they build connection as it's can happens to all people. For me, Sardi has the best performance here as he have to play two different character who warm at home and run wild at outside. Other supporting actor also play well The magician as the pairing for May although it confusing and didn't make sense and Deliveryman as the loyal friend of the father, and for Deliveryman his role to turn the mood with his comedic part make the movie less dark that it should be. I also like scoring here, it's just few but effective to set the tone. The main strength is the story, it's powerful yet disturbing at the same time the script also support the story no cliche dialog it looks natural. My only concern is the opening part when Raihaanun played as Junior school student, but it's only minor. Overall the movie give us good perspective what can be happen to people regarding sexual abuse, rape especially, and how it affect surrounding. Recommendation from me, see it while it last.

MOVIE REVIEW - MEMORIES OF MY BODY

In Center Java Juno, a pre-teen abandoned by his father, joins a Lengger dance centre where men assume feminine appearances but the political and social upheaval in Indonesia forces him on the road, meeting remarkable people on his journey.
IMDB.com

The movie that finally come to commercial cinema after his long journey at various festival at several country, seen it at limited cinema because Avengers: Endgame invasion in all cinema. Surprisingly all seat is full at the theater, good sign for Indonesian film. The story inspired by Rianto Manali's life as Lengger dancer and take various stories of traditional dancer at Java. Garin Nugroho with his experience take the helm to direct this masterpiece. Step into technical aspect, sound production department is something that I note, detail of the sound, good scoring selection and nice music to accompany us follow the life of Juno. The director also taken serious attention at little detail due the time setting is in early 90s to 2000, every instrument seems spot on. For acting, I like Muhammad Khan's acting how he move or dance seems natural and the young Juno also has good time on screen. Above all, one point that make this special is the script, I enjoy every dialog on this movie, every dialog has a meaning doesn't matter if it just trivial one or on important scene it's just make deep impression on me and all the advice, or we call it “Wejangan” in Java from the old person it seems easy to get in to our heart. Big issue that raise from this movie is the LGBT theme, but for me it's more that it, it's about how our body as a vessel of our soul is the one that take impact of all our action, our body will react to all aspect surrounding us. Our body is ours, it's our story.

MOVIE REVIEW - AVE MARYAM

Maryam a catholic nun who falls in love with a pastor.
IMDB.com
Another gem from Indonesian film, long journey from festival to festival until it can be played on commercial cinema. Simple plot, like description above, but have more meaning to it. For technical aspect this is very good film, Semarang as a background where the story happen give classic vibes through the old building that set the tone right. The dialog is minimum but scoring department give big impact to accompany us enjoy every minute of it and song choices is good too, I like the song when Maryam and Yosef pass through the forest. Maudy Koesnaedi as Sister Maryam give her best for the role, it became even better at end of story and another special performance was given by Tutie Kirana as Sister Monic, Father Yosef played by Chicco Jericho give the so-so performance. Another good aspect is cinematography, I like static camera shots that they do for many occasion make it more like portrait than movie shot. Enough for pros, let's move to the cons, I don't know if there any version of the film (director cut, etc) as the director says that the film is the same that he played at festival but for me something just doesn't make sense. Some scene have rough editing and I think they have to cut some of the scene. One that can be seen is background story of Sister Maryam who have Muslim parents (something that being informed before) is completely disappeared and it maybe makes Maryam struggle became less intense. Overall this is good film for Indonesian Movie Industry and will wider local genre that has been stuck with horror or romcom genre. Looking more like this.

MOVIE REVIEW - AQUAMAN

Arthur Curry learns that he is the heir to the underwater kingdom of Atlantis, and must step forward to lead his people and be a hero to the world.
IMDB.COM

The blog is rise from the deep of ocean to tell the tale about love story between a lighthouse keeper and noble woman. I will state it at front, this is the best movie from DCEU, so far. James Wan (Saw, Insidious, The Conjuring) is Genius. The beauty of the cinematography, the score is perfect for most situation, good fighting choreography, spot on joke and Amber "Red-head" Heard will sum it all. If I can describe the movie with one word, it would be Beautiful. This movie serve as origin story of Aquaman, portrait by Jason Momoa (the one and only khal drogo), no more blonde Aquaman like on the comics this is the bad ass Aquaman. As origin story, even compare to MCU movies only Iron Man and Black Panther origins can stood against it and from DC Wonder Woman is the closest but still below this. So, will it be the perfect movie? of course no, the movie still have some plot hole or questionable moment, I am not gonna spoiler it out, Kidman is one of them. And for the closing, they have the best kiss scene on superhero movies since Spiderman, yeah the Toby and Durst kisses upside down. The 3D effect is nice and use of color tone is more enjoyable if you see it on the biggest screen in your town, me watching on IMAX 3D. This movie like a fresh start of DCEU after their unexpected low rate movies before.

MOVIE REVIEW - STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI

Rey develops her newly discovered abilities with the guidance of Luke Skywalker, who is unsettled by the strength of her powers. Meanwhile, the Resistance prepares to do battle with the First Order.

The latest installment of Star Wars series. After the good spin-off in Rogue One, the usual space opera is back with it's familiar family. Story start right after their previous movie, Rey meeting with Luke and the Resistance run away from First Order pursue. Story itself split into 2 sub story with Rey searching her meaning to the journey and Dameron/Finn story at the Resistance side, the both story happen at same time but not touching each other until the end of movie. Generally, the plot moving flat, no big thing occur until the midway and increasing in the final third. Luke's comeback to the series bring more nostalgic feel for some of the audience due his absent in the previous one, don't forget to mention the other familiar Jedi Master which was not previously discussed. Like the old character, several new character will also take their part in the story and of course the new creature (Porg dolls will be sold out after this) also, Finn will again gets his new pairing here, so much from former Stromtrooper. From the First Order, the bad-ass red armor guard who body-guarding Snoke named Elite Praetorian Guard is the coolest new character. Cinematography wise, nothing is special except Luke's island and Rey/Kylo fighting scene with the guard, the sound department also not too stunning no unique scoring that memorable here. This film end one important part of the series, it will be interesting to see how the next film work from here considering not much mystery remain. The series will be continued in 2019 before that we will be serve with another spin off about the young Han Solo next year (May 2018).

MOVIE REVIEW - LALA LAND

A jazz pianist falls for an aspiring actress in Los Angeles
IMDB.COM

Great cinematic experience. Will bring joy, smile and a bit emotional feeling after exit the cinema building. The director didn't slow his gear after his other great film, Whiplash, as tribute for classic movies he made a film that our generation will brag it to next generation. The story is little bit cliché, about their hope and passion, but a heartbreaking moment in the ending will made it last for a long time in audience heart. Cinematography aspect is perfect; their color tone play is completely fit in the story and hill scene where Mia and Seb singing “A Lovely Night” are beautiful. Best scene for me is the opening scene with a long take with a lot a people singing and dancing, it was made so beautifully. Two leading role, Mia by Emma Stone and Sebastian by Ryan Gosling, were gave their best performance with golden globe award as the price. Their expression, dance and even sing escalated the film in other level. We can’t talk a musical movie without talking about their music and song; jazz became the big influence in this movie beside use as the background of one character it also made a perfect music to accompany us, the audience, to follow the character to archive their dream. A Lovely Night, City of Star, Another Day of Sun will make their way to my playlist, the song that make you listen to it all the day. For me, again, it was great experience to able to see this film; a film that has all perfect aspect. See this in the big screen for your full pleasure.

MOVIE REVIEW - ARRIVAL

When 12 mysterious spacecraft appear around the world, linguistics professor Louise Banks is tasked with interpreting the language of the apparent alien visitors.
IMDB.COM

Just Villeneuve sort of movie. Slow burning movie. After his success with Sicario the director is back with sci-fi theme, but not like other sci-fi film he is bring other color to the genre. The genre usually filled with war or explosion or maybe thrill like in the Alien but this movie more about the drama, the story about the connection between human and the other species. The story can be little bit confusing for someone, with a lot flashing pictures like a flashback or metaphor scene but what really happened is it has a straight time line. Villeneuve again came with great cinematography, full landscape of the alien ship with mountain background or a view when the team aboard the ship for the first time is really enjoyable moment to our eyes and for our ears, they got many good scoring at the perfect place that will bring more deep to the scene. Amy Adams give a great acting for her lead role in the movie, it is her one (wo)man show. She will get award nomination for this role I believe. On the other hand, the supporting actor like Renner or Whitaker didn't had a chance to show their quality due their lack of screen time. This movie will not satisfied all the audience, I hear some of them even sleep in theater, but for other some it will became a great experience and a pleasure journey to sci-fi genre. Recommended to watch it in cinema with a big screen and good sound, we can't waste such a quality that the filmmaker had done to make this great movie.

MOVIE REVIEW - THE REVENANT

A frontiersman on a fur trading expedition in the 1820s fights for survival after being mauled by a bear and left for dead by members of his own hunting team.

Coming from Academy Award winner, Alejandro González Iñárritu, a movie about surviving and little vengeance. Nominated for 12 Oscars this should be good movie. They really deserve the Cinematography nomination, many beautiful scene with mountains and forests pictures was perfectly displayed in the big screen. The Indian attacking scene in the beginning was f*cking awesome, with the long take and great camera moving. Everyone talking about DiCaprio in this movie, about his chance for winning his Oscar. He made great commitment here, like eating raw meat or hiding inside "that thing"- it's spoiler. Because his condition, he couldn't speak well but his expression was just good enough to send the message to audience. It's the time he get that gold statue. What lack in this movie is the story, it's not so deep like the technical aspect of the film. Beside the surviving method that Glass did it just plain movie. Yes he have the reason but, I didn't see the hatred feeling that drive him to stay alive, it's like he just survive because he can not he must. One thing that can ruin DiCaprio Oscar dream is I don't see the bounding between the Glass character and his Son, it's just so weak for me. Overall, it was good cinematic experience for me to enjoy until the end. Prepare yourself for 160 min adventure at the snow mountain in early year of America.

MOVIE REVIEW - ANT MAN

Armed with a super-suit with the astonishing ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, con-man Scott Lang must embrace his inner hero and help his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym, plan and pull off a heist that will save the world.
www.imdb.com

Predicted to became one of weakest movie in the Marvel series, it became more that good. The hero doesn't famous as Iron man or Spiderman or Captain America but the movie proofed to be better than them. Paul Rudd did a good job as Scott Lang, it's refreshing like when we saw Chris Pratt as Peter Quill in GOTG and a big name like Michael Douglas to involve here as Hank Pym it shown that Marvel rated this movie rather high. Another great performance was from Michael Peña as Lang's friend, he made a simple but likeable role. Cameo from other superhero as a characteristic of Marvel films nowadays also occurred here, even though it's minor character but it will make easier to bring Ant Man to other franchise. Don't expect a lot action like avengers, this movie had action, drama and comedy at balance, and the movie is like introducing the character of Ant Man, as the first Ant Man movies they must tell the tale to the audience. One unique thing about this movie is a point of view from a micro person, it give new experience more like Quicksilver world in X-Men: Days of Future Past.

Good summer movie, will be acknowledged like Guardian of The Galaxy last year, better than Age of Ultron. Don't forget to see mid and after credit in this movie, not a twist but still appealing.

8.0/10

MOVIE REVIEW - AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON

http://posterposse.com/

When Tony Stark jumpstarts a dormant peacekeeping program, things go awry and Earth's Mightiest Heroes, including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, The Incredible Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye, are put to the ultimate test as they battle to save the planet from destruction at the hands of the villainous Ultron.
www.rottentomatoes.com

Earth's Mightiest Heroes is back, with new friends and villain. Continue the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) this movie is included in phase two of the series. The movie will come with more action, battle and explosion. Story itself is not so deep, maybe it because to many character to take the cover but it doesn't mean bad, for new fans or non comic fans it will easy to follow with the flow. I enter MCU start with the first avenger and then watching back the phase one so, The Avenger has some place in my mind. But this Age of Ultron didn't give me same pleasure like before it's just like other summer movies. Best scene in this movie of course battle between Hulk and Hulkbuster, when both heroes going wild in the city.

So beside the story, if you looking for entertainment this is a must see movie. Don't forget this movie is end of phase two and will lead to early movies of phase three like CA: Civil Wars.

7.5/10

MOVIE REVIEW - FOXCATCHER

The greatest Olympic Wrestling Champion brother team joins Team Foxcatcher led by multimillionaire sponsor John E. du Pont as they train for the 1988 games in Seoul - a union that leads to unlikely circumstances. (IMDB.com)

A story about tragedies. Stunning performance form Steve Carell as John du Pont a multimillionaire who sponsored a wrestling club for Olympic event. Joined with him the young Channing Tatum and Mark Ruffalo as Olympic winner brother (of course he will win, he's Hulk btw). For some audience this film will be boring movie. One strong point for the film is the story that so tense and even when the pace getting slower it's still have a good feeling. Don't forget how beautiful the cinematography when they shown du Pont place. We just can't argue with "just-like-that" ending cause it's story based on real event but at least it better if they give more cinematic ending.

I give this movie 7.3/10

MOVIE REVIEW - THE IMITATION GAME

Based on the real life story of legendary cryptanalyst Alan Turing, the film portrays the nail-biting race against time by Turing and his brilliant team of code-breakers at Britain's top-secret Government Code and Cypher School at Bletchley Park, during the darkest days of World War II. (IMDB)

Mr. Cumberbatch is shine in his role. He really become central point in this movie, he can brings Turing self-center character to live. Movie it self was great adventure for me, has back and forth plot but didn't made viewer confused. For the acting department, other beside Cumberbatch also give nice performance. My appreciation was given for Hugh (Matthew Goode) to bring the character from hate guy to likeable person. I little disappointed with Keira Knightley here, when her name came in Oscar shortlist I expected she played unusual character from before but it didn't happen, it doesn't mean she have bad performance she is still good here by the way. This movie is a Oscar material it deserve the nomination, it will give us a pleasure moment after we watch it and like other good movies it will make you to search a background story behind. I bet you will open your google and type Alan Turing in the search box shortly after. Don't miss this movie, especially for Cumberbatch fan girls :D.

Movie Review - The Admiral: Roaring Currents

"The film mainly follows the famous 1597 Battle of Myeongryang during the Japanese invasion of Korea (1592-1598), where the iconic Joseon admiral Yi Sun-sin managed to destroy a total of 133 Japanese warships with only 13 ships remaining in his command. The battle, which took place in the Myeongryang Strait off the southwest coast of the Korean Peninsula, is considered one of the greatest victories of Yi." (IMDB)

I watched this cause there hype about how good this movie was. Lucky me it live up the hype. Choi Min-Sik never failed me, he gave great performance as patriotic soldier. I don't know how this movie without Min-Sik, it's like one man show from me. This movie tells about depression, loyalty, courage and hope. My favorite scene is a long shot scene when battle at the boat, the camera moved from one side to another while the soldier keep the battle on. Don't forget the beautiful scenery of Korean island will appear here too. So, if you like war movie, fans of Choi Min-Sik or maybe just regular audience who seek good movie don't dare to miss this movies. Despite there claim that this movie isn't same with the actual story it never change the fact that it is a good film.

Movie Review - SUPER
